Net Excess Generation Notes

For customers on Net Metering:

Excess generation at the end of each month is credited at the applicable retail electricity rate and rolled forward to future bills as a dollar credit. This credit rolls forward indefinitely to future bills but cannot be "cashed out".

For customers on the Feed in Tariff REG program:

All kWh produced by the solar system are paid at the applicable FIT rate. Credits are first applied to the customer’s bill. Any remaining credits are then paid to the customer monthly by check.

*Regrowth is a locked in rate for the term of the contract. Simplified applications (under 15kw) = $0.2775/kW for 15 years. Expedited applications (over 15kw) = $0.2615/kW for 20 years

Some AHJ does not allow the same utility work order# to cover the PV and MPU, please submit the Work Request form to request a new work order # for an MPU. Note: Due to the required service change for this program if your electrical meter is currently located inside it will need to be moved outside at your location to meet National Grid standards. Overhead Service Installations At the home, provide single service from the weatherhead to a multi-gang meter socket, for installation of the multiple meters required for RE-Growth. At the home, provide parallel services from the weatherhead to individual meter sockets, for installation of the multiple meters required for RE-Growth. Note: Installation of a single service from the weatherhead to a junction box mounted on the side of the house, which would subsequently serve individual meter sockets is not acceptable. Bifurcation of the service for the purposes of serving multiple meters related to RE-Growth is only acceptable at the weatherhead. Underground Service Installations Provide single service to house, which will feed a multi-gang meter socket, for installation of the multiple meters required for RE-Growth. Expansion joint is required for the feeder entering the meter socket, which is consistent with National Grid standard practice for meter installation. Note: Due to the nature of underground service installations, a multi-gang meter socket is the only acceptable means of installation.

Plans & docs

Site Plan Reqs
  • Be sure to show restricted accesses, fences, gates and access controls
  • Disconnect to be labeled "Service Equipment. Accessible and lockable" on Site Plan and SLD
  • Include make and model in all equipment descriptions (including but not limited to panels, micro/inverter(s), combiner, discos, meters).

Existing System

  • Rhode Island Energy does not allow combo plans, plans must be separate per project.
SLD Reqs

Relay Meter Orientation = Over/Under

  • Show operating phase/voltage/power (AC) ratings.
  • If a Production Meter is required, it must be labeled as "Utility-Owned Production Meter".
  • AC Utility Disconnect Switch must be located outside, always accessible.
  • Include make and model in all equipment descriptions (including but not limited to panels, micro/inverter(s), combiner, discos, meters). Note any meter numbers (if available). Which pieces of equipment are located inside? outside?
  • If post-install plans are adjusted to "as built", an Electrical EE stamp with date and signature is required on the revised SLD.

Battery Project

  • See Sample Battery SLD for requirements.
Electric Service Reqs

The switch shall be gang operated, have a visible break when open, be rated to interrupt the maximum generator output and be capable of being locked open, tagged and grounded on the Company side by Company personnel.

Compiled from public records, 2026. Tariffs and interconnection rules change; verify with Rhode Island Energy before you rely on this. The useful move: if an installer says you need a main panel upgrade, ask how these tap and interconnection policies were considered first.
