- Net Excess Generation Notes
Net Metering allows owners of on-site solar or wind system to spin their meters backwards, effectively "storing" excess energy on the grid. A common misconception is that the electricity generated by a solar or wind system needs to be stored in a battery. While this is possible, current technology does not make it very cost effective.
With Net Metering, a building receives power from both the cooperative and the Member's solar or wind system. When solar or wind generation exceeds the building's electricity requirement, the excess is "stored" on the grid, spinning your meter backwards. When your renewable energy is not generating enough electricity for the building requirements, your cooperative supplies the power needed.

Plans & docs
- Site Plan Reqs
- The disconnect switch should be located externally to the equipment package and must be accessible to and lockable by EDU personnel, within an acceptable distance of the meter as determined by the EDU, at either the primary voltage level, which may include load-break cutouts, switches, and elbows, or at the secondary voltage level, which may include a secondary breaker or switch.
- SLD Reqs
- The line diagram is required to show the protection and controls, disconnection devices, nameplate rating of each device, power factor rating, and transformer connections.
- Electric Service Reqs
- If the customer connects a backup generator directly to the customer’s wiring to serve any load on the customer’s site, he shall utilize a double-throw transfer switch in order to ensure that no power is fed back onto the Cooperative’s distribution system. This is a critical safety requirement.
- Placards
- The switch must be clearly labeled as a DR disconnect switch.
