Net Excess Generation Notes

With net metering, energy delivered to MidAmerican at the metering location is subtracted from the energy consumed (kWh consumed minus kWh delivered). If a customer consumes more energy than they deliver, the resulting net kilowatt-hour is billed to the customer at the same electric rate at which the customer normally purchases their energy from MidAmerican. If the customer delivers excess energy to MidAmerican's electric distribution system during the billing period, net metering provides the customer energy and/or delivery credits that can be stored in the customer's account for future use in subsequent billing periods. These excess credits expire based on the annual period (April or October) the customer selects in the Net Metering Application.

Electric Service Reqs

System Sizing:

There is no limit on system size as long as it passes the Illinois technical screens described in the state interconnection rules. 2,000 kW is the largest generator size eligible for net metering

Install Reqs

** MidAmerican performs a witness test of the generator prior to returning the Certificate of Completion. Either the customer or their contractor would need to meet MidAmerican onsite for the witness test.

** NEC requirements generally apply for most clearances. See MidAmerican’s Electric Service Manual for meter and service-related requirements: See File Attached "ELECTRIC SERVICE MANUAL"

** Per the State of Illinois interconnection rules. Screening is based on the AC system sized. IL Rules: http://www.ilga.gov/commission/jcar/admincode/083/08300466sections.html

Compiled from public records, 2026. Tariffs and interconnection rules change; verify with MidAmerica Energy Co before you rely on this. The useful move: if an installer says you need a main panel upgrade, ask how these tap and interconnection policies were considered first.
