Net Metering (Add on systems not eligible)

Through Netting incentive rate structure, UI will purchase all RECs generated by the qualified project, and in addition will provide monetary credits on your electric bill for any energy exported to the electric grid and not consumed on site.

Buy-All (TPO systems not eligible)

Under the Buy-All incentive rate structure, UI will purchase all the energy and Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) generated by the qualified project.

Projects must be sized so that system’s expected annual production does not exceed the highest annual consumption over any 12-month period within the past 5 years by more than 5% for the Customer of Record’s existing Revenue Meter plus the expected kWh for any planned addition of up to two electric vehicles and a whole home heat pump.

Allowances (Does not require proof by the utility)

  • Electric Vehicle (per vehicle, maximum of two): 3,285 kWh
  • Whole-Home Air Source Heat Pump: 3,608 kWh
  • Whole-Home Ground Source Heat Pump: 2,458 kWh

In scenarios where less than 12 months of historical electric usage is available for the premise with its current occupant as the Customer of Record (i.e., an existing home that was purchased and the Customer of Record has resided there for 8 months), the system may be sized up to a maximum of 9 kW AC nameplate capacity without consideration of the limited available electric usage. Such systems may exceed 9 kW AC by an amount consistent with any planned future electrification measures.

For projects at new construction homes, systems may be sized up to 9 kW AC without including an energy model with the application. If the system is sized larger than 9 kW AC, a load justification is required.

Projects must not exceed 25kW AC as measured by the Inverter Nameplate Capacity of the Qualified System’s inverter. More than one Qualified Project may be located at a single one-to-four family property, however the total nameplate AC capacity for all qualified systems may not exceed 25kW. Co-located or paired energy storage system capacity does not count towards the 25 kW AC cap of Residential Renewable Energy Solutions.

Site Plan Reqs

Site Plan Requirements

  • Name and address must match the utility bill exactly
  • Utility account and meter number must be listed
  • Indicate the front of house or FOH on plans.
  • Site Plan must include the note “AC Disconnect is within 10 feet of, in visible sight of, and on same wall as the Revenue Meter.”
  • If proximity requirements cannot be met, a request for a variance must be made to UI (CT). Please include the note “proximity requirements cannot be met, variance requested.”
  • All equipment (Inverter, Disconnect, Production meter, Battery Gateway if applicable) must be outside and grouped together. Exempt: Battery
  • A Single Production meter is required for all PV.
  • The utility AC emergency disconnect switch is required to be located on the ground level within vicinity of the utility revenue meter where utility personal will have 24 / 7 access to it.
  •  The Utility/AC emergency disconnect switch is required to be located ahead of the Production Meter where utility personal will be able to isolate the metering circuit.

Battery projects

  • Battery AC size must be shown
  • The Aggregate Total System AC Size (inverter & battery size) must be shown as a total
  • The battery information must be included in the system information
Electric Service Reqs

Will require a meter relocation whenever the utility meter is located on the interior, or in any cabinets

1. The Application shall be evaluated using the maximum nameplate rated capacity of the Generating Facility in kW AC. 2. An Inverter is considered approved if it is certified to the latest version of UL 1741 and compliant with the authorities having jurisdiction. Proof of certification may be required by EDC. 3. AC Isolation Device: Unless otherwise approved in writing by the EDC, the Customer is required to provide a manual AC Isolation Device, to be located outside and accessible to the EDC for Generating Facilities larger than 1 kW. 4.The AC Isolation Device must be appropriately labeled “Generator Isolation Device.” 5.The AC Isolation Device should be visible and in close proximity (10 feet or less) to the main utility meter panel, unless otherwise approved in writing by the EDC. 6. The switch shall be gang operated, have a visible break when open, be rated to interrupt the maximum generator output and be capable of being locked open by EDC personnel.

Install Reqs

 i.    For utility meters located inside customers facility, the interconnecting customer will be required to upgrade and have the meter relocated outside the customers facility near both the production meter and the utility disconnect switch.

ii.    The utility AC emergency disconnect switch is required to be located on the ground level within vicinity of the utility revenue meter where our utility personal will have 24 / 7 access to it.

iii.    Socket for production meter follows the same guidelines as revenue meter per the UI Guidebook of Requirements for Interconnection. Socket must have a lever bypass. Line and load conductors for the production meter cannot be in the same raceway (i.e. trough). If neutral isolation is required by the local inspector, then a neutral isolation kit from the same manufacturer of the socket must be used. Splices are not allowed.

iv.    No connections are to be made within the revenue meter socket or in utility instrument transformer compartment.

v.    Actual installation may vary based on local town inspector and NEC requirements

vi.    Nothing should be between the utility meter and meter socket.

Placards

Meter Labeling

  1. The Production meter for the netting tariff, and the buy-all meter should have a placard with the tariff ID.
  2. The tariff ID number for the netting tariff would begin with RN12345 (12345 just used as an example), or RB12345.
  3. Lamacoids are preferred, but printed labels are acceptable as long as they are weatherproof. Permanent marker is definitely NOT sufficient.
  4. The lack of label will hold up the informal approval, and we are planning to hold the install of the meters if there are no labels. Lack of labeling may cause following issues:
  5. Technicians are unsure which socket to install a meter in if multiple production sockets exist.
  6. Accidentally installing a UI meter in a production socket that was for the old (pre-2022) tariff. Causing us to re-visit a site.
  7. Labelling is also crucial on multi-family homes to ensure that our technicians can track which meter belongs to each tariff ID.

Compiled from public records, 2026. Tariffs and interconnection rules change; verify with UI - United Illuminating Company before you rely on this. The useful move: if an installer says you need a main panel upgrade, ask how these tap and interconnection policies were considered first.
