The Longmont City Council adopted a new Value of Solar (VoS) net metering credit to compensate solar customers who generate more electricity than they use. Effective January 1, 2025, the new VoS credit will apply to customers who install a new solar system or expand an existing system. Customers who already have solar installed and received their permission to operate prior to December 31, 2024, will automatically be assigned a retail (‘Legacy’) net metering credit for 15 years (until January 2040).

Utility Specific Adjustments

If third-party owned system (TPO)

  • Expected annual production is limited to 120% of the previous year’s energy usage (kWh)

If the customer has no energy usage history (like for new homes or new owners), estimate usage

  • The estimate is 6 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per square foot per year.
  • This is based on the total finished square footage (including finished basements).
  • Square footage is taken from Boulder County records.
  • This method can also be used if the home has special electric needs (like electrification upgrades) and the usual system size isn’t enough.

Variance request allowed for oversized systems

Compiled from public records, 2026. Tariffs and interconnection rules change; verify with City of Longmont before you rely on this. The useful move: if an installer says you need a main panel upgrade, ask how these tap and interconnection policies were considered first.
